Code Is Cheap Now — Taste, Judgment, and Architecture Are the New Premium_
I remember the exact moment it clicked.
It was late 2024. I was leading platform engineering for a financial services company — the kind of work where every deployment pipeline, every infrastructure decision, every line of Terraform carries real consequences. My team had spent three weeks building an internal tool: a dashboard that aggregated data from four different services, handled authentication edge cases, and displayed it all in a clean interface our operations team could actually use.
Three weeks. Four engineers. Countless code reviews, architecture discussions, and debugging sessions.
Then one of our junior engineers opened Cursor, described roughly what we'd built, and watched as the AI generated something visually similar in about forty minutes.
My first reaction was fear. The visceral, stomach-dropping kind. If a junior engineer with an AI tool could produce in forty minutes what my team had labored over for three weeks, what exactly was my team's value? What was my value?
That fear lasted about a day. Then I looked more carefully at what the AI had actually produced.
The interface looked right. The data was wired up. It even handled some basic error states. But the authentication was a security nightmare — tokens stored in localStorage, no refresh logic, session management that would fail silently in production. The database queries would have brought our Postgres instance to its knees under any real load. There was no observability, no graceful degradation, no consideration for what happens when Service B goes down but Service A is still running.
It looked like the thing. It was not the thing.
And that's when the fear turned into clarity.
The Great Inversion
We're living through what I've started calling the Great Inversion. For decades, the bottleneck in building software was the code itself. Writing it was hard, slow, expensive. Companies paid enormous sums for engineers who could translate requirements into working systems. The ability to write code was the scarce resource.
That scarcity is evaporating. Lovable hit $100M ARR in eight months. Cursor reached a $9.9B valuation. Replit reports that 75% of its users never write a single line of code. OpenAI acquired Windsurf for $3B. Twenty-five percent of the YC W25 batch had codebases that were 95% AI-generated.
The code itself has become cheap. In some cases, nearly free.
But here's what hasn't become cheap: knowing what code should exist. Knowing why this feature matters and that one doesn't. Knowing how to structure a system so it survives contact with real users, real scale, and real time.
The bottleneck didn't disappear. It moved upstream.
Garry Tan, president of Y Combinator, put it precisely: "The two things that are most important when intelligence on tap is available are actually agency and taste... everyone's a PM now. You actually have to understand the product."
Agency and taste. Not technical chops. Not the ability to write a clean React component or optimize a database query. The ability to decide what matters and act on that conviction.
The Vibe Coding Hangover
Let's talk about vibe coding, because it's the perfect case study in what happens when we confuse the ability to produce code with the ability to build products.
Andrej Karpathy coined the term in early 2025. Collins English Dictionary named it Word of the Year. The idea was intoxicating: describe what you want in natural language, let the AI figure out the implementation, don't even look at the code. Just vibe.
And it worked — for demos. For prototypes. For the kind of thing you show at a pitch meeting.
Then people tried to maintain what they'd built.
CodeRabbit analyzed 470 GitHub pull requests and found that AI co-authored code contained 1.7x more major issues and 2.74x higher security vulnerabilities than human-written code. Whitespectre, a development consultancy, found that only about 30% of AI-generated code is production-salvageable. And 170 out of 1,645 Lovable-generated apps had identifiable security issues — exposed API keys, missing authentication, SQL injection vulnerabilities sitting in plain sight.
Developers started calling it "development hell" — the experience of trying to maintain, debug, and extend an application that was vibe-coded into existence. The code worked, in the narrow sense that it executed. But it had no coherent architecture, no consistent patterns, no consideration for the things that only matter after the demo is over: monitoring, error handling, data migration, performance under load.
By February 2026, even Karpathy had moved on. He declared vibe coding "passe" and proposed "agentic engineering" as the mature successor — a workflow where humans orchestrate AI agents with oversight and scrutiny rather than blindly accepting whatever the model produces.
The shift is telling. The person who coined the term recognized that the bottleneck was never the code generation. It was always the human judgment wrapped around it.
Everyone's a PM Now
YC's Spring 2026 Request for Startups includes two entries that crystallize this shift.
The first is "Cursor for Product Managers." Their thesis: "Writing code is only part of building a product people want — the most important part is figuring out what to build in the first place." They're looking for tools that help product managers make better decisions about what to build, not tools that help engineers write code faster. The code-generation problem is effectively solved. The what-to-build problem is wide open.
The second is "AI-Native Agencies." The pitch: "Agencies of the future will look more like software companies, with software margins, and they'll scale far bigger than any agencies that exist today." This isn't about agencies that use AI. It's about agencies that are structured around the fact that code is cheap. When execution cost approaches zero, the value concentrates entirely in strategy, taste, and judgment.
Nielsen Norman Group, the gold standard in UX research, arrived at the same conclusion from a different angle: "Designers will no longer be differentiated based on technical skills. Selection, taste, and discernment make you stand out."
The pattern is consistent across every domain. When AI commoditizes execution, human judgment becomes the premium asset.
What Taste Actually Means
I want to be specific about what I mean by "taste," because it's one of those words that sounds vague until you see its presence or absence in real product decisions.
Taste is the founder who looks at twenty features their AI tool could generate this week and picks the three that matter. Taste is knowing that your onboarding flow needs fewer steps, not more, even though adding steps is trivially easy now. Taste is the decision to not build the feature your biggest customer asked for because you understand it would compromise the product for everyone else.
Taste is Steve Jobs deciding the iPhone wouldn't have a physical keyboard. It's Stripe choosing to optimize for developer experience when every other payment processor was optimizing for enterprise sales. It's the kind of decision that looks obvious in retrospect but requires genuine conviction in the moment.
In the AI era, taste manifests in a very specific way: knowing what to accept from AI output and what to reject. When an AI tool generates a feature in fifteen minutes, the engineer with taste can look at it and say, "The UI is right but the data model is wrong — this won't scale past ten thousand users and here's why." The engineer without taste ships it and discovers the problem three months later in production.
Judgment: Knowing When to Stop
If taste is knowing what to build, judgment is knowing when to stop.
AI tools have a pathological tendency toward completeness. Ask for a user settings page and you'll get preferences for notification frequency, language selection, timezone management, accessibility options, data export, account deletion — everything a settings page could have.
The founder with judgment knows that for a pre-PMF product, the settings page needs exactly two things: change your password and delete your account. Everything else is distraction dressed up as thoroughness.
I see this constantly in the founders we evaluate at AI Gens. The ones who struggle aren't the ones who can't build. Building is easy now. The ones who struggle are the ones who can't stop building. They ship feature after feature, each one generated in a fraction of the time it would have taken a year ago, and their product becomes a sprawling maze of capabilities that no user can navigate.

But then they choose one, strip it down to its essence, and build that properly. The AI accelerates exploration. Human judgment drives convergence.
Architecture: Making It Last
Here's a truth that AI hasn't changed: the hardest problems in software aren't writing the code. They're deciding how the pieces fit together.
Architecture is the set of decisions that are expensive to change later. Which database. How services communicate. Where the boundaries sit between components. What data flows where and why. These decisions compound over time — good architectural choices make every future feature easier; bad ones create a tax on every change.
AI tools are, as of today, genuinely terrible at architecture. They optimize for the immediate request without considering the system's trajectory over time. They'll cheerfully generate a monolithic function that handles authentication, authorization, data fetching, and rendering in a single file because that's the fastest path to "it works." They don't think about what happens when you need to add a second authentication provider, or when your data model changes, or when you need to deploy to multiple regions.
This is why the "25% of YC W25 had 95% AI-generated codebases" statistic is so interesting. Those companies shipped fast. Some of them will succeed because they found product-market fit quickly and can rebuild later. But many of them are accumulating architectural debt at a rate that previous generations of startups never experienced, because the code is being generated faster than any human can review it for structural coherence.
The founders who understand architecture use AI differently. They establish patterns first — manually, deliberately — and then let AI generate code within those patterns. They treat AI as a junior engineer who's incredibly productive but needs guardrails. The architecture is the guardrail.
What AI Gens Looks For
When we evaluate founders at AI Gens, we've adapted our lens to this new reality. We spend less time asking "can you build it?" and more time asking three different questions.
Can you decide what to build? Show me a product decision you made where the data pointed one way but your instinct said another. What happened? How did you think about the trade-off? This reveals taste.
Can you decide what not to build? What feature request have you said no to? What did your users want that you deliberately chose not to give them? This reveals judgment.
Can you make it last? Walk me through your system architecture. Why is it structured this way? What trade-offs did you make? What would you do differently if you started over? This reveals architectural thinking — the ability to reason about systems over time, not just in the moment.
These questions matter more now than they did two years ago because the gap between "I have a demo" and "I have a product" has widened dramatically. AI has made demos nearly free. That means the demo tells us almost nothing. What tells us something is the thinking behind the demo — the decisions, the trade-offs, the things the founder chose not to include and why.
The Prototype-to-Production Gap
There's a specific failure mode I keep seeing, and it's worth naming explicitly: the prototype-to-production gap.
A founder builds a prototype with AI tools in a week. It looks great. Users love the demo. Investors are interested. Then they try to turn it into a real product — add authentication, handle edge cases, implement proper error handling, set up CI/CD, write tests, handle data migrations, add monitoring — and they discover that the prototype's architecture actively fights against all of these things.
The prototype wasn't designed. It was generated. And generated code optimizes for the happy path. Production systems need to handle the unhappy paths — the edge cases, the failures, the weird states that only emerge when real users do real things at real scale.
This gap is the new premium. The ability to take a vibe-coded prototype and see clearly what needs to change to make it production-worthy — that's where the value lives. Not in writing the production code (AI can help with that too), but in knowing what production-ready means. Knowing which shortcuts are acceptable and which ones will hurt you. Knowing when "good enough" is genuinely good enough and when it's a trap.
The Most Valuable Skill in 2026
Here's where I've landed, two years into watching AI transform how software gets built.
The most valuable skill in 2026 isn't writing code. It isn't prompting AI to write code. It isn't even reviewing AI-generated code, though that's closer.
The most valuable skill is knowing what code should exist.
This is a product skill, not a technical one. It requires understanding users deeply enough to know what they need, understanding technology broadly enough to know what's possible, and having the taste and judgment to navigate the space between those two.
I used to think my value as a platform engineer was in my ability to build reliable systems. I now think my value was always in my ability to decide which systems needed to be reliable, which failure modes actually mattered, and which abstractions would serve the team for years rather than months. The building was the visible output. The deciding was the actual work.
For founders building in 2026, the implication is clear. The code is free. The taste is not. AI will generate whatever you ask for — the question is whether you're asking for the right thing.
The founders who thrive in this era won't be the ones who can ship the most code the fastest. They'll be the ones who can look at a problem, see the shape of the solution before a single line is written, and then use every tool available — AI included — to bring that specific vision into reality.
Code is cheap now. Taste, judgment, and architecture are the new premium.
